A Framework for Implementing Geological Disposal

This White Paper and Invitation to Communities constitute a vital step in progressing a solution for the disposal of higher level radioactive waste. It is important that communities are fully aware of the opportunity that this presents and are supported during their consideration of the invitation.

CoRWM is willing to give advice and information to communities that choose to give serious consideration to the invitation. In its scrutiny role, CoRWM will also be closely monitoring the  invitation process and will submit a full report to government in 2009.

CoRWM’s Final Report and Recommendations, published in 2006, included an integrated package of recommendations.  Government broadly endorsed the recommendations and put particular focus on progressing geological disposal of higher level waste, the concept of volunteer communities willing to consider hosting a facility and robust interim storage. Following further consultation, government has issued this White Paper and Invitation to Communities. In 2007, CoRWM was reconstituted to scrutinise and advise on the implementation of the recommendations.
